Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1964. pp . xi + 308. $4.75. This is the second edition of a textbook published in 1956. In the preface Hillway says: "The gratifyingly enthusiastic reception of this work by both professors and students . . . ever since its first appear­ ance in 1956 has confirmed the author's belief that graduate students need a general understanding of the spirit and methods of research before undertaking specialized research in their own fields. .. . As in the earlier edition, every effort has been made to present a clear description of the main principles and methods of research with an economy of words and without the unnecessary mystification so often found in works on re­ search." The author states further: "The Second Edition . . . has been pre­ pared in response to inquiries and suggestions received from colleagues and students in many parts of the United States. . . .
