Orrico Temple University In Taking Back the Boulevard: Art, Activism, and Gentrification in Los Angeles, Jan Lin offers a thoroughly-researched account of development in Northeast Los Angeles that links every- day experiences of gentrification with broader processes of metropolitan change. Written with impressive clarity, a key success of the book lies in Lin’s ability to take the reader through a vast history of transition that is as grounded and intimate as it is sweeping and extensive. The book centers on two neighborhoods in Northeast LA, Eagle Rock and Highland Park, and begins with a tour of the people and businesses that animate the public life and culture of the area’s main boulevards. In doing so, Lin brings the reader face-to- face with the people and places affected by change, and lays bare exactly what is at stake when we talk about gentrification.
