Book Review: Explaining Delinquency and Drug Use

Book Review: Explaining Delinquency and Drug Use AUST & NZ JOURNAL OF CRIMINOLOGY (December 1986) 19 (285-288) 285 BOOK REVIEWS Explaining Delinquency and Drug Use, Delbert S Elliott, David Huizinga and Suzanne S Ageton, Sage (1985) 175 pp. This 'slim volume is an important contribution to the empirical literature on juvenile drug use and delinquency, especially for those interested in research in the US. It is the first major book resulting from a national longitudinal study of youth in the United States initiated in 1975 which has followed a group of just over 1500 respondents through three waves of data collection. Since the intent of the book is to examine an integrated model of youthful delinquency, the first sections of the book consist of a thorough review of the perspectives being integrated, namely strain, control and learning theories. The extensive and careful bibliographies of these sections alone make this a valuable contribution. There are two major sections which examine data regarding the theory proposed to account for delinquency and drug use, both of which require some statistical skills to comprehend. The first approach is a multivariate test of the model which relies on a series of path diagrams tracing the effects of home strain and school http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian & New Zealand Journal of Criminology SAGE
