Reviewed by Norman Fainstein Connecticut College When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in August of 2005, it not only devastated the New Orleans region with wind and flood of biblical proportions but also provided scholars with a penetrating biopsy that reached deep into the social fabric of a storied American city and, indeed, of the nation itself. Like a thorough medical examination following a crisis in health, the studies of Katrina and New Orleans reveal that the crisis resulted from the interaction of forces external to a patient with preexisting conditions and weaknesses, some long-standing and many the outcome of past choices and lifestyles.
