Harrisburg, PA: White Hat Communications, 1996, 266 pp., $14.95 (paper). This book has two purposes: to capture the essence of what professional social workers do and to show “what their lives are like on a day to day basis” (p. xiii). To achieve these pur- poses, Grobman recruited 41 professional social workers (BSWs through Ph.D.s, and both first-year and seasoned practi- tioners) through advertisements in the newsletters of the Na- tional Association of Social Workers and other social work or- ganizations. The stories are varied, readable, and short, ranging from four to eight pages. The social workers’ stories are grouped into 12 fields of prac- tice: health care, school social work, children and families, dis- abilities, mental health, substance abuse, private practice, criminal justice, older adults, management, higher education, and communities. Each contributor vividly describes the frus- trations, complexities, challenges, and rewards of being a social worker in a distinct setting.
