Williams. London: Blackwell, 2002. ISBN 0-631-22414-9 (pbk). This fully updated, revised and enlarged second edition of Shaw and Williams’ ‘Critical Issues’ is welcome. The main themes introduced in the first edition are largely retained and appropriately updated, for example a discussion reflecting the current interest in globalization in a review of the international dimension of tourism, while the most conspicuous addition is contained in an entirely new final chapter which is devoted to a discussion of the challenge of sustainable tourism. Their approach while largely restricted to an analysis of the leisure tourist in developed capitalist economies, is fundamentally a Geographical one that seeks to analyse tourism within the context of leisure behaviour, an approach, which the authors argue, is supported by the increasingly holistic view being adopted by the social sciences.
