Literature dealing with various aspects of South African society tends to arouse interest because of the oppressive and distorted nature of that society, and because information is often difficult to obtain and strictly circumscribed. Crimes a/Violence in Black Townships is of particular interest because it attempts to explain a disturbing and growing phenomenon, viz the incidence of violence in South Africa's Black townships. The author notes the dearth of research on the topic of Black crime and the added problem that the research thus far conducted has been initiated and carried out by White researchers. Obviously in a racially polarised South Africa, and because of the vastly different cultural traditions of the Black and White communities, the question of who interprets the phenomenon of Black crime is of particular significance. This is so because of the different standards that Black and White researchers would be inclined to apply to the issue.
