Abstract

194 Australian Journal of Education Motivation, one of the most important aspects of learning, particularly in relation to classroom practices, is left until the last chapter. This chapter is something of a pot pourri; an attempt to mix the old with the new, by referring to familiar themes such as reinforcement, achievement motivation and locus of control, and recent developments such as video games. However, the relationship of what we have long known about motivation and learning and the new technology which children are encountering in the home, in leisure activities and in school (such as video games and microcom puters) deserves more thorough exploration than it has been given in this chapter. Another failing of the chapter is that in it no attempt has been made to relate motivation to the aspects of learning previously discussed. Despite the flaws and the limitations of some of the chapters, this book would be useful for both practising teachers and student teachers. It could be especially useful for teachers working as cooperating teachers in the practice teaching component of teacher education programs, in that it could help these teachers bridge the gap between theory and practice for their student teachers.
