Book Review: Breast Cancer? Let Me Check My Schedule!

Book Review: Breast Cancer? Let Me Check My Schedule! 138 Affilia Spring 1999 Breast Cancer? Let Me Check My Schedule! Edited by Peggy McCarthy and Jo An Loren. Boulder, CO: Westview Press, 1997, 288 pp., $25 (hardbound), $14 (paper). This book departs from the typical cancer narratives that tend to highlight personal self-revelations or empirical studies of selected population groups. It is a narrative study of 10 pro- fessional women, not randomly selected, who confronted breast cancer. The editors rightly assert that women who are diagnosed with breast cancer today are more likely than in pre- vious decades to be working women, many of whom are pro- fessionals. A major objective of the study was to help health care professionals recognize that professional women may present a different kind of patient, and that professionals’ understanding of these women will be enhanced by listening to these women who discuss openly and honestly the impact of breast cancer on their lives. The 10 contributors were selected to represent a cross section of lifestyles, ages (from 30 and up), ethnic backgrounds, geo- graphic locations, and professions (medicine, law, education, entertainment, real estate, and professional relations). They met in two retreats and submitted relevant autobiographical material and descriptions of their typical days. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Affilia: Journal of Women and Social Work SAGE
