In 1981 I wrote: Another area for research - one which could only be carried out in relation to offenders who have been caught and convicted - concerns the decision-making processes of robbers. What governs their choice of weapon, if a firearm was chosen did this affect the composition of the team, would fears as to greater penalties for firearms robbery operate as a marginal deterrent? (Firearms and Violence in Australian Life, p 144) There are still no Australian answers to such questions, but in Armed and Considered Dangerous the well-known American firearms policy researchers, James Wright and Peter Rossi, begin to provide some answers for the United States. Their methodology was to obtain information by way of self-administered questionnaires from almost 2000 convicted felons serving time in penitentiaries in 11 states.
