Abstract

BOOK REVIEWS It is suggested that a teacher's success with audio-lingual method will be greatly affected by the view he holds about the extent to which foreign language learning is a mechanical process of habit formation. Acceptance of Skinner's theory justifies extensive pattern drills to secure reinforcement of correct responses until habit is established. Acceptance of Mowrer's theory justifies the view that pattern drill can cause boredom and tedium to the extent of producing a punishing effect and a reliance on external stimuli, ignoring the inner 'field' of meanings. Dr. Rivers feels that in foreign-language learning the mechanical application of some standard reinforcement cannot be of any significance unless the pupil has first perceived possible satisfaction in having knowledge and skill in another language. Therefore, some real groundwork is required before the routine reinforcement of 'success' or 'failure' can be of any significance. What is reinforcing or rewarding to one individual may not be so to another individual in the same situation, because it may not be perceived by him as a reward. In regard to personal goals and values placed on learning a foreign language the teacher is often battling family attitudes which have strongly influenced the student.
