Book Review: Accountability in Higher Education Book Reviews Sheldrake, Peter and Linke, Russell (Eds.), Accountability in Higher Education. Sydney: George Allen and Unwin, 1979. Pp. 170. $12.50 cloth. With the tabling of the TEC's Final Report on Study Leave in October, 1978, even the most insulated academics in our midst suddenly became aware that the age of accountability in higher education was upon us. Readers of the popular press, of course, had been aware of the growing climate of hostility to higher education which had been gathering for some time. It was fuelled especially by the persistently vitriolic and misguided outpourings of Peter Samuel in the Bulletin (e.g. 12/3/77, "The academic can get away with finan­ cial murder ... and plunder the public purse"). "Accountability" has ar­ rived - probably to stay - and given this fact, Sheldrake and Linke's book might more accurately have been titled "Accountability in Australian Higher Education". The book consists of ten chapters which are re-drafted versions of papers given at the HERDSA Conference in Adelaide on this theme several years ago.
