Book Review: A History of Education in Antiquity BOOK REVIEWS A History of Education in Antiquity. H. 1. Marrou (translated by G. R. Lamb). 1956. Sheed and Ward, pp. xviii +466. A62/-. This work is a translation into English of Marrou's Histoire de l' Education dans l'Antiquite (Paris, 1948), a book which in its original form already occupies a secure place in the literature of the subject with which it deals. In his original introduction Marron, who is Professor of Early Church History at the Sorbonne, modestly deems " some sort of apology to be necessary to the world of scholarship for presenting it with this general study of a subject by no means new". No corresponding apology is offered by the translator for renewing the work in translation. But in neither case is an apology necessary. and one which in fact possesses that Marrou's work is one of conspicuous merit peculiarly rare merit of appealing both to the specialist in the field of ancient education and to the layman. Particularly for its lay appeal it is very fitting that the work should be made available to that larger public which can be prevented from giving serious attention to a book written in an unfamiliar language.
