Radical antivivisectionists are demanding a general prohibition on all animal experiments. Moderate groups, however, accept that animal experiments are still needed at the present time, but are calling for the development of alternative methods which do not involve the use oflive animals. At the same time, it has been proposed that a Central Registry of Data on Animal Experiments (Zentrale Erfassungsstelle fur Tierversuche (ZET») be established. The ZET could be effective in reducing the numbers of animals used - by eliminating unnecessary duplication of experiments. At the Federal Health Office (BGA), this problem has been investigated in an attempt to decide whether the establishment of such a central institution should be incorporated into the proposed 1984/85 revision of the Animal Protection Act in the Federal Parliament.
