About the Authors Krista M. Brumley is a Visiting Professor in the International Relations department at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico. She is a doctoral candidate of Sociology from Tulane University. Her dissertation research exam- ines the role of NGOs and political participation in Monterrey, Mexico. Cindy Tyrene Cooper is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology and a J.D. candidate in the Law School at the University at Buffalo. Her primary areas of interest include social and legal theory, urban studies, and historical methods. Her current research involves a social history of land use regulation. Kevin Fox Gotham is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at Tulane University in New Orleans. He is currently investigating the restructuring of housing finance in the United States and the transformation of the political economy of tourism in the last two decades. He is also exploring the political economy of tourism and the conversion of cities into sites of fun, leisure, and entertainment. Christopher Mele is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University at Buffalo. He is the author of Selling the Lower East Side: Culture, Real Estate and Resistance in New York City (University of Minnesota, 2000) and co-editor (with John Eade) of Understanding the City: Contemporary and Future Perspectives (Blackwell, 2002). Jeffrey M. Timberlake is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago. His dissertation estimates effects of residential segregation on the neighborhood context as experienced by children. In addition, he is working with Patrick Heuveline on a comparative study of changes in adult partnership formation patterns and children’s family structure experiences.
