AAACE's Decade of Contributions to the Field of Adult and Continuing Education ,&\ MACE TENTH AHNlvLRSARY AAACE’s Decade of Contributions to the Field of Adult and Continuing Education Overview Elaine Shelton itting with my husband, Gary, and friends at the President’s Reception at the AAACE conference in Philadelphia in November of 1983, I watched Don Seaman sworn in as the first president of AAACE along with the rest of the twenty-nine member Board of Direct- 01s. Our newly born association held great promise, but none of us could be certain in what ways that potential would be realized over the years. From a vantage point of ten years later, I was asked to look back over the past decade to chronicle some of the ways AAACE has contributed to the field of adult and continuing education in the mas of governance, legislation, and continuing professional education. As a ten-year member of AAACE’s Board of Directors, as the person who spearheaded AAACE’s efforts at strategic planning during her year as presidentelect, and as coordinator of the association’s struc- tural reorganization as immediate past president, Mary Williams is able to address comprehensively AAACE’s contributions in the ma ofgovernurn.
