A Review of Periodical Literature REPORT ON EDUCATION S. A. RAYNER Failure in Australian Universities The Commonwealth Government's prompt decision to grant millions of pounds to remedy the deficiencies of staff and equipment in Australian Universities has been the most gratifying educational news of late 1957. It is not yet possible to tell whether the Australian universities are attending as quickly to other recommendations of the Murray Committee and especially to those relating to the selection of students and the university failure rate. The Committee received" many complaints" from universities about the quality of the education students received in their secondary schools; they were told that students had received too little training in basic subjects and were too immature to adapt themselves quickly to the university environment. Such views were not supported, however, by the Directors of Education. by the Murray Committee which recognized These views were also rejected that Australian secondary schools have other tasks besides preparing prospective university students. Since so many secondary students will never enter a university, the Committee recommended that secondary schools be evaluated " because of the contribution they make in their own rights quite apart from what they do for future university students."
