A Multidimensional Empirical Analysis of Leadership in the Small Business Setting A MULTIDIMENSIONAL EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF LEADERSHIP IN THE SMALL BUSINESS SETTING LEO RANDALL SIMPSON, University of Colorado A field study was designed to assess the correlation between leadership style and subordinate satisfaction and perfonnance. Leadership style' was defined as the leader's initiating structure (IS) and consideration (C) behavior as perceived by subordinates. The moderating effects of leader and subordinate demographic characteristics, of leader and subordinate attitudes, and of leader and subordinate values on the leader­ of these moderating effects was ship model were also assessed. The assessment conducted in three phases. The first phase analyzed the individual influence ofleader and subordinate demographic characteristics, attitudes, and values on the interaction of leader IS and C with subordinate satisfaction and performance. Phase two examined the effects of the congruence of leader and subordinate demographic characteristics, attitudes, and values on subordinate satisfaction and perfonnance. Phase three examined the effects of congruence of individual subordinate and subordinate work group on individual subordinate satisfaction and performance. Previous studies of leadership have been inconclusive because parameters used to study leadership have been incomplete and because environments of previous leader­ ship studies have been too complex.
