A Computer Investigation of Verbal Characteristics of Effective Classroom Lecturing JACK H. HILLER Night Vision Laboratory, Ft. Belvoir GERALD A. FISHER University of North Carolina WALTER KAESS University of Connecticut One important method of communicating knowledge to the student is the classroom lecture. Although much research has been devoted to the evaluation of teaching methods, the educational psychologist can not confidently specify many teacher behaviors which contribute to or interfere with effective explanation in the ordinary classroom. To advance understanding of this important teacher activity, a program of research was undertaken by Gage and his associates (Gage, Belgard, Dell, Hiller, Rosenshine, and Unruh, 1968), and a sizeable body of data were collected. *»2 1This project was planned and directed by N. L. Gage at the Stanford Center for Research and Development in Teaching. M. Belgard and B. Rosenshine collected the classroom data: Rosenshine also participated in designing the study. 2Gage first proposed that computer approaches be explored; this paper is the direct result of work begun by the first author at the Stanford R& D Center and completed at the University of Conn. The authors wish to express their gratitude to Gage for his generous support, and thank D.
