USE OF TALUS, SAFARI, DISTANCE, FLAGSHIP, AND TRISTAR FOR CONTROL OF CITRUS MEALYBUGS, 2004A

USE OF TALUS, SAFARI, DISTANCE, FLAGSHIP, AND TRISTAR FOR CONTROL OF CITRUS MEALYBUGS, 2004A (G14) COLEUS: Solenostemon scutellariodes (L.) The trial was conducted in a greenhouse at the Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Overton, TX. Coleus plants were grown in 6.5-inch azalea pots containing Sun Gro LC1 Mix. Plants were fertilized daily with 20-10-20 fertilizer at 100 ppm. Plants were set up in a RCB design with five replicates. The plants contained adults and nymphs at the start of the trial. Treatments were applied using a CO backpack sprayer with an 8002VS tee-jet flat spray nozzle at 35 psi. All foliar insecticide treatments included a non-ionic organosilicone (Thoroughbred 5 gal/100 gal). Safari drenches were applied as 4 oz of liquid per pot. All treatments were applied on 9 or 15 Jul 2004. Numbers of mealybugs were monitored on the same two inches of plant stem on 9 Jul (0 DAT), 15 Jul (6 DAT), 22 Jul (13 DAT), 30 Jul (21 DAT), and 6 Aug (28 DAT). Data were transformed using a logarithmic transformation [log10 (x + 1)] and were subjected to ANOVA. Means separation was accomplished using LSD (P ≤ 0.05). The mealybug population on the control plants declined in three of the replicates. This explains why statistical differences did not start to occur until 21 and 28 DAT. All systemic insecticides, Safari, Flagship, and TriStar, provided excellent control of the mealybug by 13 DAT. Talus treatments and the 32 fl oz Distance rates proved control by 21 DAT.
