Reviewed by Walter Otto Weyrauch* This book is the culmination of a sustained scholarly effort in volving repeated field research in Caribbean and Pacific islands and separat e articles leading toward and incorporated in th e present pub lication. It contains an overview of those territories and island na tions tha t are politically and economically closely allied to th e United States . I am not aware of othe r scholarly efforts tha t in equal fashion comprise the historical, cultural and legal information on the United States territories and affiliated jurisdictions. The cultures and laws involved are greatly disparate and seem to have little in common, cer tainly in regard to their relations to th e United States and their own indigenous legal systems. Laughlin's work ha s th e earmark s of a pio neering effort that, in the absence of other appropriate characteriza tions, shows aspects of Blackstonian creativity.
