Reviewed by Edgar Bodenheimer* Professor Schlesinger, who was the sole author of the first four editions of this book, has for the fifth edition been joined by three co-authors. As th e Preface explains, this was done largely as a coop­ erative effort; each co-author, however, has assumed primary re­ sponsibility for additions and changes appearing in specified sections of the new edition. The amount of additions is moderate; th e size of th e book was increased by only fifty-five pages. But both the text and the footnote references were brought up to date. Th e general arrangement and sequence of topics has remained th e same in the new edition. The introductory part deals with the nature, purposes, and expected benefits of the comparative ap­ proach.
