Clark* Klaus Rohl, professor of legal sociology and legal philosophy at th e Ruhr University at Bochum, has written the most comprehen­ sive and useful book on sociology of law to b e published in Germany during the past 15 years. His accomplishment is all the more im­ pressive since there are a significant number of fine general treat­ ments available on the subject. A German perspective on sociology of law is particularly interesting and important, moreover, since it 2 3 grows out of the grand tradition of Max Weber, Eugene Ehrlich, and Wolfgang Friedmann. In his foreward, Rohl states that he sees three paths for legal sociology to take. First, in the manner of Niklas Luhmann, one might attempt to fit all experimential material into one grand the­ ory of law and society. Second, along the path taken by Erhard Blankenburg, one might reject grand theory in the style of conven­ tional criminology and undertake systematic empirical research driven by theoretical pluralism.
