President’s Report 1988-89

President’s Report 1988-89 This report briefly reviews some of the major events of the 1988-1989 season and is my first opportunity to present an annual re­ port of the President of the American Foreign Law Association. Th e most visible activity of the AFLA is th e monthly luncheon pro­ gram in New York City. By inviting and introducing our speakers I have had the privilege of getting to know some outstanding lawyers and legal scholars. Th e year began with a discussion of one of the final legal chap­ ters arising from a tragedy which occurred almost half a century ago. In September 1988, Nicholas Doman, an invited observer by the French government to the Klaus Barbie trial, spoke on the jurisdic­ tional and procedural aspects of that prosecution. Mr. Doman shared with the members present his insights and some personal anecdotes concerning the lawyers and judges involved in the proceeding. In October 1988 we learned about recent developments in Euro­ pean competition law from Jean-Eric de Cockbourne of th e EC's Bu­ reau of Competition. Also from the European Community, Dr. Raffaelo Fournasier addressed the AFLA in March 1989 on the pro­ gress towards 1992.
