Preface Journal of African Economies, Vol. 23, AERC Supplement 1, pp. i1–i3 doi:10.1093/jae/ejt025 In line with its mission of strengthening local capacity for conducting inde- pendent rigorous inquiry into problems of managing Sub-Saharan Africa economies and facilitating evidence-based policy-making in the region, the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) holds two research workshops in June and December every year. The first day of each biannual research workshop is devoted to a 1-day plenary sessions aimed at addressing topical policy-relevant issues. The purpose of the plenary sessions is to offer an environment for African economists to present their research and receive constructive criticisms voiced by their peers, resource persons from within and outside the region and policy-makers in Africa. The primary objectives of plenary sessions are to (i) inform AERC researchers on emerging issues in a particular area of research, (ii) provide a forum for signalling new research concerns or deepening existing ones within the thematic focus and (iii) provide lessons for policy-makers on how such issues might be effectively addressed in African context. Authors of plenary papers are, therefore, leading experts on the relevant topic whose presentations typically cover current economic policy-relevant issues with respect to the theme of the plenary; http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of African Economies Oxford University Press
