JOURNAL OF AFRICAN ECONOMIES,VOLUME 13, AERC SUPPLEMENT 2, PP. i–ii The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) holds two Research Workshops a year. Their purpose is to offer a rigorous environment for African economists to present their research and receive constructive criticism voiced by their peers and resource persons from within and outside the region. A series of plenary papers are presented at the beginning of each workshop to encourage further research and to present the state of the art on particular policy-relevant topics. This is a unique opportunity to capture the issues deemed critical to sub-Saharan Africa’s economic development. The analysis of these issues is undertaken by leading economists worldwide. Completed and future plenary sessions focus on several issues: • Growth and long-term development • Macroeconomic and growth implications of fiscal and financial policy • External shocks and capital flows • Financial liberalisation and financial markets • Exchange rate policy and foreign exchange markets • Comparative development and reform experiences • Regional integration, industrial policy and trade • The political economy and the effects of macroeconomic policies • Institutions, governance and the political economy of development • Poverty, inequality and labour market issues • Financial and currency crises •
