Abstract

BOOK REVIEWS 1989] 421 mercial law. The text does not embark upon the problems of other types of unification. Presumably, it is now recognized as undesir able. Secretary General Gorbachev has expressed his sense that ther e is no need to homogenize cultures close to a Soviet model. Each socialist country is told that it may create its own path to so cialism. While it is unlikely that a path leading to a capitalist ori ented system would be welcomed by Soviet policy makers, even they are breaching the doctrinal wall Stalin constructed. All are intro ducing mixed economies, with joint ventures with capitalist firms and widespread reestablishment of the cooperatives which Stalin forbade. Artisans are authorized to conduct previously forbidden trades. Evidently, unification of economic structures is no longer en visaged. The would-be unifiers now concern themselves with com mercial details and no more. This book could have been a report on a conference anywhere in the Romanist legal world. Perhaps that is the major import of its message for Westerners who try to plot the future of Eastern Europe. SOVETSKOE SRAVNITEL'NOE PRAVOVEDENIE V USLOVIIAKH FEDERAT- SII.
