Noonan, Jr. * In this chapter of th e Encyclopedia a half dozen specialists write on Christian law (Paul Heinrich Neuhaus); Jewish law (Ze'ev W. Falk); Moslem law (Norman Anderson); Hindu law (Duncan M. Derret t and T. K. Krishnamurthy Iyer); and customary law, chiefly African (Raymond Verdier). The authors are all authorities in their respective fields. They pack their surveys densely with information. They provide citations and bibliographies. With one exception, the articles perform very well the first function of an encyclopedia: they furnish balanced comprehensive overviews which will permit th e reader to proceed to deeper examination or more controversial explorations. Th e authors, rightly, do not eschew all value judgments in presenting the law as it stands.
