In a laboratory experiment, novel insecticides were tested for their efficacy against the German cockroach. Bio Block, containing plant oils, BioUD10, containing plant oils and 2-undecanone, and pure 2-undecanone were compared with the established insecticides Raid, Raid Max, Hot Shot, and Ortho Home Defense in regard to their insecticidal activity. Distilled water was used as a control. For the experiment, two-week-old adult cockroaches were placed into Fluon-treated diet cups (30 mL) in order to prevent escaping. Ten µL of an insecticide were placed onto the pronotum of each cockroach, the cup covered with a lid, and time-to-death was measured with a stopwatch. Physiological death was recorded as cessation of movement of all appendages. Three replicates of the experiment were run on separate days, with a total of 26 individual cockroaches (13 males and 13 females) tested for each substance with the exception of Ortho Home Defense and the water control, where 16 cockroaches (8 males and 8 females) were used. Data were log transformed and analyzed with ANOVA, and means were separated with least squares means. Raid, Raid Max, and 2-undecanone resulted in the shortest time-to-death, followed by BioUD10 and Bio Block, while Hot Shot and Ortho Home Defense took the longest (Table 1). No mortality was observed in the water control. Females took longer to die than males (Table 2). This research was supported by industry gifts of 2-undecanone, BioUD10, and Bio Block.
