Leonard Macon Ridge Station LSU AgCenter Winnsboro LA 71295 Yellow sugarcane aphid: Sipha flava (Forbes) Field performance of selected seed treatments was evaluated against yellow sugarcane aphid on grain sorghum at the LSU AgCenter Dean Lee Research Station near Alexandria, LA. Grain sorghum seeds pre-treated with a novel formulation of Cruiser and several other seed treatments were planted on May 3, 2006. Plot size was 4 rows × 60 ft. Treatments were replicated four times in a RCB design. Ten yellow sugarcane aphids were released on a plant on one of the center rows within each plot on May 20, 2006, but the resulting infestations were a complex of yellow sugarcane aphids (majority) and other aphids.. Plant density and number of healthy plants was estimated at 21, 28, and 35 DAP by examining 5 ft on each of the two center rows within each plot. Aphid densities were recorded by examining 10 plants on the two center rows of each plot at 21, 28, and 35 DAP. The 10 plants sampled in each row were selected from each side of the plants originally infested with yellow sugarcane aphids. Grain yield of the two center rows for each plot were recorded at 128 DAP and was adjusted to 14% moisture. Data collected from the two center rows in each plot were pooled. Pooled data were analyzed using ANOVA and means were separated using the LSD test at the α = 0.05 level. Cruiser (A9765) appeared to be effective for controlling yellow sugarcane aphid. Plant density and number of healthy plants in plots that received the Concep plus Captan plus Allegiance-LS plus Gaucho treatment was consistently lower than that in plot receiving other seed treatments. Plant density and number of healthy plants in plots that received the Concep plus Maxim plus Apron treatment were also lower than that of plots treated with Concep plus Maxim plus Apron plus A9765 (200 GA/100KgSeed), Concep plus Maxim plus Apron plus A9765 (250 GA/100KgSeed), or Concep plus Maxim plus Apron plus STP15201. Aphid densities were not significantly different among treatments at 21 DAP. At 28 and 35 DAP, aphid densities were significantly higher in plots treated with Concep plus Maxim plus Apron compared to plots receiving any of the other seed treatments. Plots treated with Concep plus Captan plus Allegiance-LS plus Gaucho produced significantly lower grain yields compared to plots receiving any of the other seed treatments.
