DiFonzo E-mail: difonzo@msu.edu Soybean aphid (SBA): Aphis glycines Matsumura Foliar insecticides were compared with an untreated check and Cruiser 5FS seed treatment under low SBA pressure at the Michigan State University Saginaw Valley Bean and Beet Research Facility, Saginaw, MI. The trial used a RCB design with four replications of 10’ x 40’ plots, planted in 30 inch rows at 148,000 seeds per acre on 5 May. Weekly whole-plant SBA counts were taken beginning 16 Jun. Counts averaged less than 2 SBA per plant on all sampling dates before treatment. Despite low aphid numbers, foliar insecticides were applied at the R3 growth stage on 20 July. This mimicked the practice of some growers to apply a ‘prophylactic’ treatment in anticipation of mid-season aphid flights. Treatments were applied using a CO pressurized backpack sprayer with twin jet nozzles at 40 psi and 20 gpa. Whole-plant SBA counts and plant stages were taken on 5 plants per plot 6, 14, and 21 DAT. Aphid numbers remained extremely low in the untreated check for the remainder of the season. Yield was taken with a Hage 125 combine with a five foot grain head. Data was analyzed using ANOVA and LSD (P = 0.05). There were no significant differences in SBA per plant or yield among treatments.
