All treatments were applied to single-tree plots in a RCB design with four replicates (Table 1). Trees were sprayed to runoff using a hydraulic handgun sprayer operating at 200 psi. Rate calculations were based on a spray volume of 400 gpa. Treatments were evaluated by wrapping ½-in double-stick tape around four 1-in branches on each tree to trap SJS crawlers. Tapes were replaced weekly or at longer intervals when populations were low. SJS crawlers on each tape were counted under a stereomicroscope. Crawler counts were analyzed for each monthly sampling period. In addition, fruit (25 per tree) was examined visually for SJS marks at harvest (20 Sep). Data were analyzed with analysis of variance and mean separation used Fisher’s Protected LSD test. Assail, Centaur and the standard Lorsban greatly reduced the crawler counts compared to the untreated check for the duration of the experiment (Table 2). Assail, Centaur and Lorsban significantly reduced the number of live crawlers found on the fruit and the fruit damage at harvest (Table 3). In summary, the test demonstrated that Assail applied at delayed dormant (30 Mar), Centaur applied at first generation crawler emergence (10 Jun) was as effective as a Lorsban application at delayed dormant for SJS control (Table 3).
