EFFICACY OF MITICIDES FOR CONTROL OF TWOSPOTTED SPIDER MITES ON WATERMELON, 2012

EFFICACY OF MITICIDES FOR CONTROL OF TWOSPOTTED SPIDER MITES ON WATERMELON, 2012 Arthropod Management Tests 2013, Vol. 38 doi: 10.4182/amt.2013.E76 (E76) WATERMELON: Cirullis lantus (Thunberg), ‘Sangria’ Joanne Whalen University of Delaware 531 South College Avenue Newark, DE 19716 Phone: 302-831-1303 Fax: 302-831-8889 E-mail: jwhalen@udel.edu Bill Cissel E-mail: bcissel@udel.edu Twospotted spider mite (TSM): Tetranychus urticae Koch The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the effectiveness of foliar miticides for control of TSM on Watermelon. ‘Sangria’ watermelons were transplanted on 25 May at the University of Delaware Research and Education Center located near Georgetown, Delaware. Plots were two rows wide and 20ft long, planted on 7ft centers. Each treatment was replicated 4 times and arranged in a RCB design. Foliar treatments were applied on 15 Jun and 18 Jul using a CO pressurized back pack sprayer. The 15 Jun treatments were applied with a 3 nozzle boom equipped with XR 8002 tips, delivering 27.6 gpa at 40 psi. The 18 Jul application was made using a 5 nozzle boom equipped with XR 8002 tips, delivering 18.4 gpa at 40 psi. The percent infested plants and TSM populations were determined by counting the number of adult and immature TSM per 50 leaves from 10 randomly-selected plants per plot. The number of TSM infested plants was recorded from 29 May through 27 Jun for the first application and on 16 Jul and 23 Jul for the second application. Data were analyzed using Proc GLM, and means were separated by Tukey’s mean separation test (P=0.05). TSM pressure was moderate at the time of the first application and high at the time of the second application. Although treatments did not statistically separate out after either application date, the following trends were observed. After the first application date 15 Jun, the Sniper and Hero treatments had a numerically higher percentage of infested plants at 7 and 12 DAT1 (Table 1). The mean number of TSM per 50 leaves at 7 DAT1 was also numerically higher for the Sniper and Hero treatments compared to the other treatments (Table 2). After the second application date, 18 Jul the Zeal, Agri-Mek and Portal treatments had a numerically lower number of TSM per 50 leaves at 5 DAT2 compared to the Oberon, Sniper and Hero treatments (Table 3). No phytoxicity was observed. This research was supported by industry gifts. Table 1.
