Nagle E-mail: cnagle@ufl.edu Silverleaf whitefly (SLWF): Bemisia argentifolii (Bellows & Perring) The efficacy of Mesurol in combination with TriStar was evaluated at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, Wimauma, Fla. Plugs of ‘Florida Red Mound’ lantana were potted, one plug per 4 inch pot, and moved to a greenhouse on 14 Jun 2005. The plants were irrigated with capillary mats under 50% shade cloth. Immediately after potting, SLWF were introduced to the plants by placing them near pots of infested lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum). The experiment was established in a RCB design with six replications and six plants per plot. Plants were pruned to a ht of 4 inches on 2 Aug. Treatments were applied twice (28 Aug and 2 Sep) and consisted of four combinations of Mesurol 75W and TriStar 70WSP at two concentrations each, and TriStar applied alone and a untreated control. Treatments were applied using a hand-held sprayer with a spray wand outfitted with a nozzle containing a 45-degree core and a no. 4 disc, pressurized by CO to 40 psi, and calibrated to treat 1000 plants per 5.87 gal of spray mixture. Treatment effects on adult whiteflies were measured weekly 25 Aug - 6 Oct immediately before effects were measured on immatures. Numbers of adults resting on the undersides of three leaves per plot were recorded in the mornings. Treatments’ effects on immature whiteflies were evaluated weekly from one 1.42 cm diameter disc per leaf cut with a no. 10 cork borer from three plants per plot. Samples were chosen from the middle 1/3 stratum of the plant. Immatures monitored were segregated into unhatched egg, scale-like nymph, and mounded pupal (mounded nymphal) stages and empty pupal exuviae with the aid of a dissecting microscope. Empty pupal exuviae reflected whiteflies that had completed their immature development to the adult stage. Numbers of insects present were summed over the three discs to yield insects per 4.8 cm . Data were transformed log (x+1), except for pupae which were transformed v(x+0.5), prior to ANOVA and means were separated by Fisher’s Protected LSD (P = 0.05). Non-transformed means are reported. Four days after the first application of treatments (1 Sep) densities of SLWF unhatched eggs were lower in all of the chemically treated plots than in the untreated checks. Lowest densities occurred in plots treated with Mesurol at 16 oz. plus TriStar at 1 oz. Six days after the second application of treatments (8 Sep) and for the remainder of the experiment, densities of SLWF unhatched eggs among any of the chemically treated plots were not less than those in the untreated checks (Table 1). SLWF crawlers through large nymph densities were lower in all of the chemically treated plots than those in the untreated checks on 1 Sep and thereafter until 28 Sep. At that time densities were lowest among plots treated with either Mesurol at 16 oz plus TriStar at 1 oz or Mesurol at 8 oz plus TriStar at 2 oz (Table 2). Densities of SLWF pupae were lower in all of the chemically treated plots than in the untreated check plots for all sampling periods after the second application of treatments until 28 Sep. At that time lowest pupal densities occurred in plots treated with either Mesurol at 16 oz plus Tristar (at either the 1 oz or 2 oz rate), or Tristar applied alone at 2 oz (Table 3). Thirty-four days after the second application of treatments (6 Oct) lowest densities of SLWF pupal exuvia occurred in plots treated with TriStar at 2 oz either alone or in combination with Mesurol (at either the 8 oz or 16 oz rate), or in plots treated with TriStar at 1 oz plus Mesurol at 16 oz (Table 4). Six days after the second application of treatments (8 Sep) lowest SLWF adult densities occurred in plots treated with TriStar at 2 oz plus Mesurol (at either the 8 or 16 oz rate). For the following three sampling periods there were no significant differences in adult SLWF densities among any of the chemically treated or untreated plots (Table 5). No phytotoxicity was observed on any of the plants in this study. Table 1.
