(E25) COLLARD: Brassica oleracea acephala L. 'Top-Bunch' Diamondback moth (DBM); Plutella xylostella (L.) M. F. R. Khan, R. P. Griffin Department of Entomology Clemson University Clemson, South Carolina 29634-0365 Phone: (864) 656-5045 EFFICACY OF BIOINSECTICIDES AT CONTROLLING DBM ON COLLARD, 1998: 'Top-Bunch' collard seedlings were transplanted on 24 Jun at the Clayton Rawl Farm (Test I), 6 Jul at the Clinton Sease Farm (Test II), and 30 Jul at the Walter Rawl & Sons Farm (Test III), Lexington County, South Carolina. Experimental plots consisted of two adjacent 0.9 m wide rows, 4.5 m long, arranged in a RCB design with four replications. Seedlings were placed 30 cm apart within rows and were irrigated by overhead sprinklers. Treatments were applied with a CO -powered backpack sprayer using a three-nozzle boom equipped with TX10 hollow cone tips. The application rate was 893 liters finished spray per hectare at 4.2 kg/cm (60 psi). In Test I, treatments were applied on 16, 23, 29 Jul, and 5, 12, Aug and insect counts were taken on 16 (pre-treatment), 23, 29 Jul, and 5, 12, 19 Aug. In Test II, treatments were applied on 29 Jul, 5, 12, 19, 26 Aug and insect counts were taken on 29 Jul (pre-treatment), 5, 12, 19, 26 Aug and 2 Sep. In Test III, treatments were applied on 12, 19, 26 Aug, and 2, 7 Sep and insect counts were taken on 12 (pre-treatment), 19, 26 Aug and 2, 7, 14 Sep. Diamondback moth larval populations were high during all the trials. SpinTor® and Proclaim were the most efficacious of the insecticides tested, effectively controlling all DBM populations. Plants in plots treated with Mycotrol showed a browning coloration on the leaves that would not be acceptable on the fresh market.
