Rossi** Most lawyers are aware of the frustration experienced while seeking guidance from a hornbook or handbook addressed mainly to students exploring a new field of law: more often than not, th e need t o explain the basics of a legal discipline in a didactic manner pre­ vents the author of th e manual from meeting the specific legal ques­ tions posed by scholars and practitioners. Paradoxically, a second problem exists when the author of the handbook is also the author of a more elaborate treatise on the same subject matter. In such a case, the handbook is likely to be a mere summary of the major work. Thus, while looking for an answer to a particular question, a lawyer who already possesses some knowledge is likely to seek a more elaborate analysis of the issue as presented in the treatise, rathe r than resorting to the handbook.
