Arthropod Management Tests 2013, Vol. 38 doi: 10.4182/amt.2013.F21 (F21) CORN: Zea mays L. ‘N33R/GT/CB/LL’ Bradley L. McManus South Dakota State University 103 SPSB, Univ. Granular applications were made to four rows (~ 50 ft long; spaced 30 inches apart) treatment plots at planting-time. Experimental plots were arranged in an RCBD with four replications. Granular insecticides were applied with computer-assisted Smartbox insecticide delivery system. All metering units were calibrated on the planter before treatment applications and mounted on a 4-row Kinze corn planter. In-furrow treatments were placed directly between double-disk openers and into the open seed furrow. The Agrisure RW ‘Syngenta N33R/GT/CB/LL were used with a CruiserMaxx seed treatment at 0.25 mg (AI)/seed for secondary pest control. Corn seed was planted at a rate of ~ 26,000 kernels per acre. Ten soil cores per treatment and replication were dug randomly from the two outer rows and sent to a Nematode testing lab for evaluation. Nematodes were extracted from the soil (endoparasitic nematodes). Only plant parasites were counted and their population densities from the soil are expressed as nematodes per 100 cc soil. Nematode extractions and counts were conducted by: University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Corn Pathology Laboratory The middle two rows were undisturbed and used for yield assessments. Yield and nematode count data were analyzed by using SAS version 9.2 PROC MIXED/PDIFF option with the Saxton’s lettering macro. Nematode count numbers for Helicotylenchus spp. and Pratylenchus spp. were not significantly different for locations or treatments in this study. At the Bryant location Spiral nematode numbers were numerically higher in the treatments without Avicta Complete and were lower on hybrids treated with Counter insecticide when compared to the hybrid without. The numbers of nematodes in corn not treated with Avicta Complete were greater than the 1000 per 100cc of soil at the Bryant site. Such numbers can result in damage to corn plants and reduced yield. Treatments were not significantly different at either location due to the high variability between replications.
