Gut gut@pilot.msu.edu Pear rust mite (PRM): Epitrimerus pyri (Nalepa) Mature 'Bartlett' pear trees at the Trevor Nichols Research Complex in Fennville, MI (Pear 3 Block) were sprayed with an FMC 1029 airblast sprayer at a rate of 100 gpa. Two-tree plots were arranged in a RCB design with four replications. Tree spacing was 18 x 20 ft, with one buffer tree and one buffer row separating all plots. Regular maintenance applications of Vangard, Agri-Mycin 17, Dithane DF, and Polyram, were applied to the entire orchard separately. Application of test materials were made on 19 Apr (TC), 26 Apr (White bud), 14 May (PF), 29 May (1C), 12 Jun (2C), and 25 Jun (3C), 11 Jul (4C), and 24 Jul (5C), as indicated in the tables. Dates of PRM evaluations were 11 Jul, 23 Jul, and 8 Aug. On each sample date, 50 leaves per plot (200 leaves per treatment) were brought into the lab for evaluation and the sample then brushed in a mite-brushing machine. The resulting plates were examined under a stereo microscope for PRM motiles. Mean data for rust mites are reported as PRM motiles per leaf. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and means separation by LSD at P = 0.05. Agri-Mek provided good season-long control of PRM. AzaDirect suppressed PRM populations as long as applications were maintained, but populations built up to untreated levels by the 8 Aug evaluation. These data suggest that Calypso may flare PRM populations.
