CONTROL OF BLUEBERRY MAGGOT, 2005

CONTROL OF BLUEBERRY MAGGOT, 2005 (C8) BLUEBERRY: Vaccinium corymbosum L. ‘Rubel’ John C. Wise Department of Entomology Michigan State University East Lansing, MI 48824-1115 Phone: (517) 432-2668 Fax: (517) 353-5598 E-mail: wisejohn@msu.edu Kevin Schoenborn E-mail: schoenb6@msu.edu Rufus Isaacs E-mail: isaacsr@msu.edu Blueberry maggot (BM): Rhagoletis mendax Curran This trial was designed to help determine effective rates and timings of various insecticides for control of BM in Michigan. The insecticides were applied to mature ‘Rubel’ blueberry bushes (Blueberry 1 Block) at the Trevor Nichols Research Complex in Fennville, MI with an FMC 1029 tractor-mounted airblast plot sprayer calibrated to deliver 50 gpa at 2.5 mph. All plots consisted of single 48-ft-long rows of bushes (12 bushes per plot) and were arranged in a RCB design with four replications. Bushes were spaced 4 × 12 ft apart and all plots were separated by at least one buffer row. In addition to using buffers to minimize drift, a “donut” shaped piece of cardboard was placed over the fan on the airblast to reduce airflow. No maintenance pesticides were applied to the test plots during the trial. Applications of test materials were initiated seven days after the first sustained flight of BM and were made on a 14 d interval on 14 Jul, and 29 Jul. In order to accurately evaluate BM infestation, four qts of berries were picked at random (approximately 5.25 lb and 5000 blueberries) per plot at normal harvest on 5 Aug. The samples were placed on quarter inch hardware cloth in 6-qt plastic boxes and larvae were allowed to drop out of the blueberries into a 1- inch layer of sand. After incubating the samples for three wks at ambient temp, the sand was screened for the presence of BM pupae by passing it through window screen. The berry samples were returned to the boxes and incubated for an additional two wks, but no additional pupae were found. Data are presented as the number of pupae treated plot control per plot, and % control. Mean percent control was calculated using Abbott’s formula; [1 – (n / n plot )]*100, and all data were analyzed using ANOVA and means separation by LSD at P ≤ 0.05. All treatments except Avaunt reduced BM infestation compared to the untreated check. Guthion, Imidan, and Capture all provided percent control levels of 75% or higher.
