When asked out of con­ text, this question seems almost meaningless. A legal education for whom, when, where, and to wha t ends? These days, in th e Unite d States, we see article s in law reviews, in newspapers, and on th e web lamentin g wha t has been called "the crisis of th e American law school." Most of these pieces deliver a strong an d worrisome message: American legal education ha s become detached from the practice of law and is too costly. Above all else, it no longer responds to th e demands of th e moment. While these controversies go on, th e perspective may be "inter­ nal," as when academics in law schools engage in an intense rethinking of thei r role and undertak e a general review of thei r cur­ riculum and researc h agenda.
