CALIFORNIA RED SCALE INSECTICIDE EFFICACY TRIAL, 2005

CALIFORNIA RED SCALE INSECTICIDE EFFICACY TRIAL, 2005 (D4) ORANGE: Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, ‘Washington’ navel Elizabeth E. Grafton-Cardwell Department of Entomology, University of California, Riverside, CA 92521 Tel: (559) 646-6591 Fax: (559) 646-6593 bethgc@uckac.edu Christopher A. Reagan California red scale (CRS): Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) A field trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of Movento, Admire, and Lorsban with an untreated check for the control of CRS in an orchard of 21-yr-old ‘Washington’ navel oranges at the Lindcove Research and Extension Center, Exeter, California. All live 1st and 2nd instar scale as well as 3rd instar and mature female scale were counted on five one- year old twigs (23 cm long) and five fruit (when available) which were randomly selected from each of ten sample trees to determine CRS population density. On 23 May 2005, 12 oz and 16 oz Movento 150 OD and 12 pt Lorsban 4E were applied to foliage diluted in 1000 gpa using a Bean hand-sprayer at 450 psi. Admire 2F at 32.0 oz/acre was applied on 23 May 2005 to the soil under the tree canopy in a 200 ml water dilution per tree with a CO2 backpack sprayer. Application was made directly to the soil surface beneath the tree canopy within the sprinkler wetting zone following 1 hour of irrigation. Trees were irrigated for approximately 2 hours after the Admire application. All fruit was harvested from sample trees on 18 Jan 2006, and evaluated for the total percentage of fruit infested with CRS, the percentage of fruit with > 10 CRS (those more likely to be downgraded due to blemish), fruit number/tree and average fruit weight (lb). Data were analyzed using ANOVA after log (x + 1) of numbers or arcsine square root (x) transformation of percentages and the means were separated according to LSD (P = 0.05). None of the treatments significantly reduced scales on twigs compared to the untreated check (Table 1). Evaluations of fruit in Sep and Oct demonstrated significant CRS reduction in trees treated with Lorsban, Admire, and Movento. Lorsban, Admire, and 16 oz Movento treatments each significantly reduced the percentage of fruit infested with > 10 CRS per fruit (Table 2).
