Burbank Arthu r von Mehren, Story Professor of Law Emeritus at Harvard Law School, has had a long, productive, and distinguished career as both a scholar and practitioner of comparative law. This book is a revised and updated version of th e General Course on Private Inter­ national Law that he gave at the Hague Academy of International Law in 1996. As th e author states, the "volume is the fruit of half a century of scholarship and teaching" (pg. 25). Precious fruit it is, well illustrating von Mehren's strengths as a scholar: his erudition, his intellectual curiosity, his analytical rigor, his intimate familiarity with multiple legal systems, his mastery of comparative methods, and his willingness and ability to bring international and suprana­ tional legal regimes to the comparative enterprise.
