Arthu r von Mehren's death in Januar y ended a scholarly career of nearly 60 years. He began studying foreign law in 1946 in a Eu rope devastated by dictatorship and war. While many Americans went to teach American legal principles to others, Arthur went to learn. He studied for a year at the University of Zurich which had escaped wartime devastation. The following year, he studied Ger man law in Berlin while working as Chief of th e Legal Section of th e American Occupation Military Government. He collected material he would publish ten years later in his classic casebook, The Civil Law System. In 1948-49, h e studied French law a t th e Universit y of Paris . He ha d been appointed an assistan t professor of law at Harvard Uni versity before his departure in 1946. He became a full professor in 1953, and, in 1976, was name d Story Professor of Law. Although he formally retired in 1993, unti l th e end of hi s life h e remaine d active— teaching, studying, and writing. A memorial to him which will ap pear in the Rabels Zeitschrift is co-authored by a student,
