Leaves with eggs were brought into the laboratory and held at 20°C for 24 h. The leaves were dipped for 2 sec in solutions of various materials and allowed to air dry, then transferred to petri dishes containing moist pieces of paper towels to maintain high relative humidity. The dishes were placed in a growth chamber set at 20°C, 16:8 (L/D). Each treatment was replicated five times with 6-8 eggs/replicate. Eggs were exmained every 2- 3 d to determine hatch and larval survival. There was no difference in percentage of eggs dead for RH-5992, Guthion, and the control, whereas, Insegar was toxic to eggs of SP. Guthion appeared to be toxic to neonate larvae as they hatched. %Egg No. eggs Live Ppm tested Hatched Dead Treatment larvae RH-5992 2 F 90 44 52.5a 47.5a 48.6ab Insegar 25 WP 40 33 19.9b 80.1b 14.2c Guthion 35 WP 300 41 46.3ab 53.7ab 22.1bc Control-distilled (water) — 39 65.3a 34.7a 65.3a Means in columns followed by the same letter are not significantly different (P = 0.05; DMRT). Each treatment was replicated 4 times. The trees were planted to a spacing of 20 x 20 ft. Treatments were applied with a platform-mounted John Bean sprayer, 35 gpm pump, equipped with a handgun to thoroughly wet the trees. Approximately 4.2 gal of spray were applied per replicate tree. Date of application was 8 Aug. During the experiment, general maintenance sprays of captan and calcium chloride, as well as 2 alternate-row applications of Guthion 35 WP and Lannate 1.8 L (0.35 and 0.225 lb (AI)/acre, respectively) were applied to all plots on 9 and 23 Aug. The effect of treatments on mites was evaluated by counting mites several times during the season on samples of 25 leaves/tree, 100 leaves/treatment. The effect of sprays on the mite predator S. punctum was evaluated by 3-min counts of adults, larvae, and pupae around the periphery of test trees. None of the treatments affected any stages of S. punctum within the first two wk after application. Variation in treatments starting on 21 Aug appear to be due to declining mite populations.
