Geneva, NY 14456 APPLE, ACARICIDES TEST, 1995: Treatments were applied with a truck-mounted airblast sprayer calibrated to deliver 100 gpa to 0.03-acre plots of apple trees in two orchards. In the Route 14 orchard the trees were ca. 8 yr old, 14 ft high, and planted 14 by 20 ft apart. In the Sergeant Rd. orchard the trees were ca. 10 yr old, 12 ft high, and planted 10 by 20 ft apart. Treatments were arranged in a RCB design and replicated twice in each orchard. Control schedules were compared using Agri-Mek at pink (16 May) or petal fall (5 Jun) in trees receiving no delayed dormant oil application, and Agri-Mek or Omite at the date-dependent ERM threshold (2.5-7.5 motiles/leaf) in trees that had received a 2% dormant oil application on 1 May. ERM eggs and motile forms were counted on 25 randomly selected leaves/replication at weekly intervals. The Route 14 planting had moderate ERM pressure, and the Sergeant Rd. site had very high ERM pressure. At both sites, the pink and petal fall Agri-Mek treatments performed most effectively, maintaining populations below threshold levels for the entire season, and keeping foliage in excellent condition despite the lack of an early season oil spray and occasionally extreme mite pressure. There were very few statistical differences in numbers of motile mites between the pink and petal fall application timing. Agri-Mek applied at ERM threshold worked reasonably well, but was not significantly better than the Omite standard in the Route 14 orchard, where an additional late-season Omite spray was still required; some bronzing of the foliage was noted on the trees in this Agri-Mek treatment. In the Sergeant Rd. orchard, lower motile mite numbers were seen in the Agri-Mek at threshold plots than the Omite standard, although both were over threshold during late Jun and early Jul.
