ANT MOUNDING ON A GOLF COURSE FAIRWAY, 2007

ANT MOUNDING ON A GOLF COURSE FAIRWAY, 2007 (G41) TURFGRASS: Agrostis palustris (Huds) David R. Smitley Department of Entomology 243 Natural Sciences Building Michigan State University East Lansing, MI 48824-1115 Phone: (517) 355-3385 Fax: (517) 353-4354 E-mail: smitley@msu.edu Terrance W. Davis Phone: (517) 353-9672 E-mail: tdavis@msu.edu Turfgrass ant: Lasius neoniger Emery An irrigated bentgrass section of the eighth fairway of the Norway course at a Resort in Cadillac, MI was divided into 9 ft x 9 ft treatment plots with a 3 ft buffer between plots. Each treatment plot was replicated six times. Plots were blocked based on precounts taken on 28 Jun by counting the no. of active ant mounds in each plot. The treatments were applied on 28 Jun with a handheld salt shaker as all of the treatments were granular. The fairway with the applied treatments was not irrigated the night following insecticide applications. The golf course is on sandy soil and the irrigation was run nightly throughout the rest of the test. Plots were evaluated on 5 Jul, 12 Jul, 19 Jul, 25 Jul, 2 Aug, 9 Aug, 23 Aug, 6 Sep and 20 Sep by counting active ant mounds in each plot. All of the compounds tested except Triazicide gave significant ant mounding reduction 7 DAT. At the 70-day and 84-day post application counts, there were no significant differences in ant mounding. There were no significant differences between the untreated checksand any of the compounds containing imidacloprid/synthetic pyrethroid or synthetic pyrethroids by themselves at any time after the 7-day sample. Compounds containing thiamethoxam generally gave greater than 50% reduction in ant mounding throughout the test, with these differences being significant for the first 60 d following application. The A15008B formulation of thiamethoxam/lambda cyhalothrin gave the highest amount of ant mound reduction through the 35-day sample, but the longest period of 50% or greater reduction of mounding was in plots treated with thiamethoxam by itself. Triazicide was not significantly effective in reducing ant mounding at any time during the test. Table 1.
