American Foreign Law Association, Inc. President's Report President's Report AMERICAN FOREIGN LAW ASSOCIATION 1992 Th e 1991-1992 program year of the American Foreign Law Asso­ ciation was framed by global events which will shape the future of th e world: democratization of Eastern Europe and the former So­ viet Union, the expansion of the European Community and the in­ creasing influence of the United Nations, both to combat aggression in the Middle East and as a force for building democracy around the world. This season we were fortunate to have some renowned inter­ national lawyers and brilliant speakers give us their insights into these and other developments. In September 1991, Sir Gordon Slynn, at that time a Judge on the European Court of Justice, spoke on the problems of the Court of Justice, giving particular insights into the work of the Court and the practical difficulties in dealing with the numerous Community languages and legal traditions. A delightful speaker and a penetrat­ ing intellect his insider anecdotes made the luncheon particularly memorable. Earlier this year, Sir Gordon became Lord Slynn of Hadley, when he was appointed to th e House of Lords.
