Meredith Mowder Tiona Nekkia McClodden, CLUB, an exhibition at Performance Space New York, New York, NY, May 3–26, 2018; Phil Collins, Bring Down the Walls, presented by Creative Time and The Fortune Society, New York, NY, May 5–27, 2018. he club is having a moment in the art world’s spotlight, emerging from the dark not only as a fluid social space, but also as a historical subject, T artistic medium, studio, and exhibition model. Two recent and concurrent month-long projects in New York City opened on the heels of MoMA’s exhibition on Club 57—Tiona Nekkia McClodden’s CLUB at Performance Space New York and Phil Collins’s Bring Down the Walls partnership with Creative Time and The Fortune Society. Both ventures created clubs in hopes of fostering dialogue and revelatory catharsis, foregrounding the club as a communal space filled with potentiality.
