The use of pentamidine in aerosolized form to prevent this disease is offering renewed hope among those at risk for this infection. Fisons' U.S. subsidiary in Bedford, Mass., has been conducting clinical studies on both the drug and the device. The firm told WDL that the nebulizer delivers drug particles to the lungs in low doses with minimum toxicity. Fisons said this prevents severe side effects that result from higher intravenous doses of pentamidine.
