As hyaluronic acid (HA) has become one of the most common facial aesthetic augmentation filler agents, the need to effectively deal with procedure-related complications is much greater. Adverse events such as overcorrection and asymmetries owing to product misplacement through poor injection technique can undermine positive treatment outcomes because, although they are classed as temporary, HA-based dermal fillers can last up to 12 months or longer. Hyaluronidase treatment fortunately offers aesthetic practitioners a potential solution to multiple HA-filler based adverse effects. When used correctly, hyaluronidase is also an effective treatment for some serious adverse reactions to HA and can help to remove unwanted HA deposits. It has also been shown to be useful in managing rare granulomatous foreign-body reactions to HA and delayed onset nodules, once infection or inflammation have been treated or ruled out.
